In September 1994, promoter Bob Arum officially announced the highly anticipated title fight between undefeated fighters James Toney and Roy Jones Jr.[1] Toney came into the fight as the IBF super middleweight champion, having won the title on February 13, 1993, from Iran Barkley and having since successfully defended the title three times. Jones, the reigning IBF middleweight champion since defeating Bernard Hopkins on May 22, 1993, had defended the middleweight belt only once before vacating the title in order to move up to the super middleweight division and challenge Toney. The men were considered to be two of the top fighters in the sport.[2] Toney was ranked number two in the pound-for-pound rankings, while Jones was number three. On July 5, 1909 at the Mission Street Arena in Colma, California, middleweight champion Stanley Ketchel, from Grand Rapids, Michigan, defended his title against former middleweight champion Billy Papke, from Spring Valley, Illinois. It was the fourth fight between these two giants. Their first bout was in June 1908 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and went to Ketchel by decision. The rematch was three months later in Vernon, California. Papke stopped Ketchel in the 12th round of a scheduled 25-rounder. The rubber match was fought in Colma, California two months later. This time Ketchel KO\u2019d Papke in 11. Going into their fourth fight, The Michigan Assassin was 41-2-4. Papke was 26-2-5. The fight was scheduled for 20 rounds.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

Of the two judges,\u00a0Kid McPartland<\/a>\u00a0gave Louis 10 and Farr 5, while Charley Lynch scored eight for Louis, four for Farr and three even.” The AP had Louis winning 8-5-2.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

June 12, 1940. Carmel, New York. Former heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey (L) and Chilean Challenger Arturo Godoy (R) who is set to meet heavyweight Champion Joe Louis in a return match at Yankee Stadium on June 20, 1940, spar at the Training Camp in Carmel, New York. In the first bout at Madison Square Garden, Louis won by split decision. Joe declared afterwards: “This was the worst fight I ever had.” Godoy, as expected, disagreed with the decison and said, “Of course, I think I win. Certainly, I should get no worse than draw.” In the return match Louis was a 5-1 betting favorite. Godoy’s face was so badly battered that the Associated Press reported that his face looked like “barbecued beef.” Godoy was floored late in the seventh round. He got up right before the bell rang to end the round. Louis dropped Godoy twice in the eighth round. After the second knockdown, the referee stopped the fight without a count. Godoy tried to go after Louis when he got up, but he was restrained. Later, when he had calmed down, Godoy shook Louis’ hand and congratulated him.”That’s the worst beating I ever gave a man,” Louis said after the fight. meanwhile, Dempsey, donning gloves publicly for the first time in seven years sparred two one-minute rounds with Godoy. Jack is training for his fight with Cowboy Luttrell in Atlantic, Georgia in July.\u00a0 The fight was booked for the night of July 1 at Atlanta’s Poncede Leon Park.\u00a0 When Dempsey returned to Atlanta a few days before the match, thousands greeted him at Terminal Station. There followed a boisterous, police-escorted parade through town. On fight night a crowd of 12,000 showed up at the stadium. People cheered as the 205-pound Dempsey who made his way to the ring. But the man who had drawn the first million-dollar gate, in 1921, and had packed Sesquicentennial Stadium in Philadelphia with 120,757 fans for his first bout with Gene Tunney, in 1926, now found that his corner stool was an empty beer crate. The bout was as quick as it was brutal. Dempsey, his foot and hand speed gone, nonetheless pounded the clumsy 226-pound Luttrell to the canvas four times, battering his face into a bloody mask. Early in the second round,\u00a0 Dempsey caught Luttrell flush on the jaw with a left hook, knocking him head over heels through the ropes and into the first row, where he struck his head on a camera case and lost consciousness. The crowd roared. Dempsey, gasping for breath, was exhilarated; he had earned only $4,000, but he had the old feeling. As for Luttrell, he woke up in the hospital an hour later, $800 richer.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n
