DiBella Entertainment enthralls fans with Broadway Boxing Show at Brooklyn\u2019s Pope Athletic Complex<\/span><\/p>\n

October 24 \u2013 Brooklyn, NY. DiBella entertainment put on a full packaged fight card for hardcore fight fans and the casual alike. The setting was the quant gymnasium of St. Francis College founded in the early part of the 20th Century. The original landscape of that part of town presents foundation remnants that still ring true with the local residents. Fire escapes, narrow alleys and craft laden architecture envelopes the area that walking the neighborhood makes one feel that time has not jumped into the modern era.\"\"<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Lou DiBella put together quite a comprehensive fight card that filled the night with many tastes to sample.\u00a0 It was basically his local talent against some hardcore pugilists and journeyman from a good portion of the globe.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Ariel \u201cEl Kuman\u201d Lopez, 23, 14-0 (8), of Mexico, but now residing in Queens, NY, started the night off against a tough Victor \u201cPillito\u201d Garcia 17-11 (8), of Tlalnepantla, Mexico, in the featherweight contest. It was a hard-fought battle to open the promotion and the fight could have gone either way for the six exciting rounds, but aggressive Lopez prevailed.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Rising prospect and jewel of the franchise, Jude \u201cKing Zar\u201d Franklin, of Brooklyn, NY, bested Hayron Santiago-Lopez, 22, of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, as the judges voted in favor of the super featherweight phenom over six, but the winner had a fair amount of sweat on his brow when the ring announcer revealed the verdict. Lopez connected numerous times as he attacked the slick undefeated Franklin the entire fight without letting up.\u00a0 Franklin was wobbled several times during the match, but kept to his battle plan of boxing from the outside and stabbing hard jabs into his adversary\u2019s face.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The most action-packed and entertaining fight of the night saw featherweight Jose \u201cChocolatito\u201d Gonzalez, 23, 13-0-2 (4), of New York, NY, capturing a unanimous 8-round nod over rugged Ramon Contreras, 34, of Quellon, Chile.\u00a0 Gonzalez used his ring generalship, effective aggression and his mixed bag of sharp punching with both fists to edge out a very game opponent.\u00a0 After eight, two judges had Gonzalez winning by tallies of 78-73, while the other judge had it razor-thin close at 76-75. The two warriors fought their hearts out and the capacity crowd on hand cheered their efforts.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Super lightweight enforcer Pablo Valdez, 36, 3-0 (3), of New York, NY, garnered his third straight KO as he blasted away at Jimmy Rosario, 34, 3-9 (2), of Puerto Rico. The late bloomer Valdez administered a savage beating to the game, Rosario, who succumbed in the second round of a scheduled four-rounder.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Juan Carrillo, 27, 2-0 (1), of Barranquilla, Colombia, in his second professional contest, outscored his opponent, Afwana King, 30, 1-1 (1), from Nigeria, but now residing in Bronx, NY, in a cruiserweight mixer with a decision that seemed unpopular with the keen-eyed audience.\u00a0 All three judges had Carrillo winning by identical scores of 40-36,<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Another enjoyable bout of the evening involved the unbeaten top-20 heavyweight contender George Arias, 27, 15-0 (7), of San Francisco de Marcoris, DR, but now residing in Bronx, NY, outclass his previously undefeated opponent Gabriel Hernandez, 24, 10-1 (9), of El Cajon, CA, by a wide margin on the scorecards.\u00a0 Arias won a unanimous 8-round decision by scores of 80-72, 79-73 and 77-75.\u00a0 Arias never gave his rival a chance to get on track as he repeatedly scored with accurate jabs and blistering right hands.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

WBC (USNBC) super lightweight champion Mykquan Williams (L) squares off with\u00a0 Tre’Sean \u201cTrigger\u201d Wiggins<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

The feature of the bill was between WBC (USNBC) super lightweight champion Mykquan Williams, 21, of East Hartford Ct, 15-0 (7), against the cunning southpaw Tre’Sean \u201cTrigger\u201d Wiggins, 29, 11-4-3 (6), of Newburgh, NY. It was the first defense for Williams, who had previously won the vacant laurels with a 10-round decision over Rickey Edwards on May 17. Against Wiggins, the champion had a difficult time in figuring out his southpaw opponent\u2019s slippery style and could not land a telling blow throughout the 8-round bout, although he kept up steady pressure of lefts and rights throughout the contest.\u00a0 The challenger was effective with his pesky right jab, which kept Williams at bay.\u00a0 It was a nip and tuck affair with plenty of action. At the end of eight rounds, two judges saw the bout even at 76-76, while one official scored the bout for Williams at 77-75. It was too close to call, so few in the crowd had any complaints with the majority draw verdict.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Another featured bout saw undefeated female super featherweight Tiara Brown, 31, 8-0 (6), of Washington, DC, win a majority decision over the gutsy Vanessa Bradford, 35, 5-2-2, of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, by scores of 77-75, 79-73 and 76-76.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Deontay Wilder KO’s Dominic Breazeale in 1 to retain WBC Heavyweight Championship<\/strong><\/span>\"\"<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The setting was set Saturday Night, May 18 for the continuing saga of Deontay Wilder, 41-0 -1 (40 KO’s) the WBC Heavyweight Champion of the World.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Wilder fought to defend his laurels against the relatively unseasoned and marginal opponent Dominic \u201cTrouble\u201d Breazeale, 20-2 (18 KO’s) at The Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Breazeale, of Glendale, CA, somehow got the #1 nod as the mandatory surprisingly without ever even beating a top ten Heavyweight Contender throughout his career.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Notwithstanding, the crowd appeared to be filled to capacity to its near limit of 19,000.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

From my vantage point there were droves of people coming in groups and I estimated about 5,000 tickets were probably provided as complimentary. That means in reality 20% of the fans that attended were receiving freebies. The fight card overall was a paltry one\u00a0 – offering a showcasing of the Featherweight Champion Gary Russell Jr., 30-1 (18 KO’s) defending his title against past his prime, former Junior Featherweight Champ Kiko Martinez, 39-9-2 (28 KO’s). After smashing Kiko\u2019s face in, Russell won by a 5th-round TKO.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>“I did pretty well,” Russell said. “We stayed behind the jab, and he couldn’t get past it. We knew that intellect over athleticism would get it done. We want Leo Santa Cruz. We want to make this fight happen,” Russell said. “The fire is all the way hot on this side of the field. You will get burned. I would love for that fight to happen this year. Let’s make it happen.”<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Two of Russell’s brothers also were on the bill, as well as an interesting heavyweight match between Cuban Heavyweight Olympian Robert Alfonso 18-0-1 (8 KO’s) and native of Georgia Iago Kiladze 26-4-1 (18 KO’s), which ended in a majority draw.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Since the Barclays Center opened in 2012, it has become the jewel of the Downtown Brooklyn which is the centerpiece of the former downtrodden and now revitalized area in the borough.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The contest was easy money in the bank for for Wilder, who retained his title for the 9th<\/sup> time. Wilder, 223 \u00bc, also had acknowledged that Fury was under severe psychotropic medication protocol to treat his condition which compromises the body. But low and behold, Fury pulled a draw and some feel beat Wilder, surprising and shocking the boxing world.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Unlike the Fury bout, Wilder\u2019s match with Breazeale, 255 \u00bc, was extremely predictable. After a slow ring walk, the champion entered the ring dressed as a cross between Darth Vader and Emmett Kelly.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Forty-Five punches were actually thrown in the fight, including an unchecked jab with little resistance, and a weak counter attack by the challenger. Suddenly, with less than two minutes ticked into the fight, Wilder lashed out with a swift jab that jolted Breazeale.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Before the challenger could even get his head straight, he was immediately blasted by an overhand right hand that crashed upon his skull, dropping him hard upon the canvas.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>While Breazeale was stretched out on Queer Street, referee Harvey Dock began his count. At seven<\/em>, the challenger attempted to rise, but was too late as Dock soon tolled the fatal ten<\/em>. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Breazeale still had not pulled himself totally erect, thereby, the challenger was counted out at the 2:17 mark of Round 1.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Simply put, Breazeale had no business being in there, as a matter of fact, he had no business ranked in the top ten. He was lumbering, tentative and lacked severe defensive skills.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

During the match, I had a chicken platter with fries and a coke from the concession stand. It resulted in me forking over 25 smackeroos for the privilege of seeing Wilder bomb out another foe.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The bout’s promoter was Tom Brown (TGB Promotions), and the fight was aired on both Showtime and Sky Sports.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cEverything just came out of me tonight,\u201d Wilder remarked after the brief, but brutal battle. \u201cI know it\u2019s been a big build-up to this fight. There was a lot of animosity, a lot of chaos. There was a lot of hatred between us and there were a lot of words that were said. It just came out tonight, and this is what makes boxing so great.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The undefeated champion added, \u201cI had so much inside I had to endure and that I had to overcome, even with the training. There were many times my body was hurting. I just told Breazeale I love him and of course I wanted to see him go home to his family. I know we say some things we don\u2019t mean sometimes, but then when you get into a fight and you settle your differences as men and you hold these gloves, this is what the sport is all about.<\/span><\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

Canelo Alvarez captures WBA super middleweight title before a sell-out house in Madison Square Garden<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

December 15- New York City, New York. At Madison Square Garden before a full throng of attendees of 20,112, Saul Alvarez had captured the WBA Super Middleweight, 168 pound belt and added to his already impressive collection by knocking out Englishman, Rocky Fielding with a 3rd round devastation.<\/span><\/div>\n

This was a showcase of course for the “movie star good looks” Alvarez who had just signed with DZAN and promoter Eddie Hearn for a $365 million dollar contract and a commitment to fight a 5 year, 10 fight agreement with the Sports Streaming Network. It is reputed as the most lucrative contract in all of professional sports.<\/span><\/div>\n

Alvarez and Fielding started to exchange activity right from the opening bell. “Canelo” displayed a vicious body attack with a generous mix of uppercuts and dropped Fielding 4 times during the duration of the 3 round fight. Although Fielding, 31, had a 5 inch height and reach advantage over Canelo, and even tried to make a contest out of it, he\u00a0 was sadly outclassed and totally out of his league with the Mexican superstar.\u00a0\"\"<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n

With the loss, Michael “Rocky” Fielding, a native of Liverpool dropped to 27-2 (15). He is still the number 4 ranked Super Middleweight coming out of The UK, and he won the WBA title strap by knocking out German opponent Tyron Zeuge 23-1-1 (13) in the 5th round of his previous contest. He was also knocked out by trinket holder Callum Smith in a first round contest back in 2015.<\/span><\/div>\n

On the other hand, Santos Saul Alvarez Barragan, continues to trek to Canastota at the ripe old age of 28, with an impressive 51-2 (35) record.\"\"<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n

On the 8 fight promotion, were the likes of former Jr. Middleweight Champion Sadam Ali 26-2 (14 ) decisioning Mauricio Herrera 24-8-(7) , Jr Lightweight Champion Tevin Farmer 28-4 -1 (6) continuing his amazing 22 fight unbeaten streak with a UD over Francisco Fonseca 22-1-1. Mexican American prospect Ryan Garcia 17-0-(14) was also cameoed with a 5th round Kayo of Braulio Rodriguez 19-3.<\/span><\/div>\n

Unfortunately, former Middleweight Champion David LeMieux ‘s bout 40-4-(34) with Tureano Johnson 20-2 (14) was cancelled do to the fact that LeMieux couldnt make the agreed upon weight.<\/span><\/div>\n

On attending the fight card, I noticed at least 90% of the audience\u00a0 attending was probably 2nd generation Mexican American. The music that was usually played at fight promos was also a different format. Gone was the predominant Hip Hop, Rap and Top 40 music genre interjected. A mix of Rock Classics, Mexican Pop and Ballads were generously spread out which was surprisingly soothing to my ear.<\/span><\/div>\n

I also couldn’t help marvel at the fact that despite the sellout crowd, there seemed to be a well conducted, respectful and courteous audience present.<\/span><\/div>\n

There appeared no unruliness with very little drinking and absolutely no safety issues. Overall it seemed like a potential avenue for a family friendly event, and maybe that’s what promoters Eddie Hearn and Oscar De La Hoya are aiming for with Canelo leading the charge.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
There were drawbacks present. I was sitting in the cheap seats and the ticket prices were $81.00 cost (30 dollars above the normal price for that range). The Premium Parking recommended by MSG was $62.00 for a 5 hour window period. The Cost at the concession stands range in price depending on the vendor, but remember I was sitting up at the top, a hot dog went for $7.00 and beer price ranging between $13.50 and $14.00. depending if your tastes lie with domestic or imported.<\/span><\/div>\n

Ticket Prices were listed within proximity of the ring in ranges as follows. $1000.00, $500, $300, $200, $150, $100, $75, and $50. Not to mention associated surcharges and tack on fees.<\/span><\/div>\n

Overall the Promoters must recoup some of their losses due to the investment layout they have made for this contract and promotion.<\/span><\/div>\n

It was a pleasurable experience being at that boxing card. It did appear that it was a safe environment for a guy to bring his wife and kids to. It was such a non-threatening audience that the guy in front of me in the stands wanted to buy me a soda because I was polite and respectful to him.<\/span><\/div>\n

A great Marketing Strategy, This was the first Boxing Sellout in New York in years, whether it be at MSG, The Barclay Arena or The Veteran’s Memorial Nassau Coliseum.<\/span><\/div>\n

The Strategy of the targeted market audience was virtually overlooked and untapped in the New York area with second generation Mexican Americans up until this point. Mikey Garcia, a super star in his own rite had not been a draw and fan favorite here for whatever reason.A co-feature with Garcia and Alvarez may be in order for promotion of fan interest. Other notables who could be co-featured are Jose Ramirez and David Benavidez, the possibilities are limitless. Welcome to the new kids on the block.<\/span><\/div>\n

Andy Ruiz ( The Destroyer) is a Heavyweight contending Boxer who was rated in the top ten of all major sanctioning bodies until he went on hiatus from activity for over a year that resulted him being dropped out of the ratings<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n

Any Ruiz sports a professional record of 30-1 (20). He fought for the vacant WBO Heavyweight title in December of 2016 against Joseph Parker 24-1 (18) and lost a majority decision.\u00a0 Subsequently, with a new trainer and new conditioning coach he resumed his progressive career. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Andy, who possesses lightening speed, with a high work rate, a good command of combinations and considerable power, has re-entered boxing with a vengeance knocking out former 2004 US Olympic team captain Devin Vargas 20-5 (8)\u00a0 in the first round. His upcoming fight with Kevin Johnson 32-9-1 (16) at the Save Mart Arena in Fresno ,California, July 7th will be another step toward regaining his Heavyweight prominence.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Standing 6’2 and fighting between 250-300 ponds, Ruiz is deceptive to the eye. Although he looks somewhat thick and beefy, he is a boxing talent with a great deal of ring intelligence. <\/span><\/div>\n

Andy<\/span>: There’s more organization in the US, more emphasis on styles, moving and picking shots as opposed to the Mexican style of moving forward.<\/span><\/div>\n

Bernie: Wladimir Klitschko once said in an interview that he never had a street fight in his life. Were you a street fighter?\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Andy<\/span>:Yes, I used to come home a good amount of time bruised and battered, you had to fight to build up your reputation.<\/span><\/div>\n

Bernie: Talk about some of your proffessional fights?<\/span><\/div>\n

Andy<\/span>: My signiture fight was against Tor Hamer for the NABF crown. It was an intense fighting exchange for as long as it lasted He had a good resume. He actually landed a betterpercentage of punches landed but I outboxed him and quit on his stool after the third round. I was a little angry and deprived me the right to knock him out where I saw that it was going.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Bernie:In one of your earlier fights you beat Oliver McCall’s son Elijah?<\/span><\/div>\n
Andy<\/span>: Yea, it lasted 3 round and he was riding a 7 fight win streak and I outworked him, by the end of the 3rd round he stopped defending himself and referee Kenny bayless stopped the contest. His Father was present and he was so angry that he wanted to fight me too.<\/span><\/div>\n

Bernie: Who is the hardest puncher you have ever faced?<\/span><\/div>\n
Andy<\/span>: It had to be Siarhei Liakhovich. It was his fight his last fight as a proffessional. I understand he trained real hard for the fight. It was the first fight that I was involved in that went the distance. Liakhovich hit me in the back rib with a punch that was devastating, that area hurt for months.<\/span><\/div>\n

Bernie: You fought in Beijing twice?<\/span><\/div>\n
Andy<\/span>: Yes, in addition to the olympic trials in 2008, I fought Joe Hanks and 3 months later, I fought Tor Hamer on the undercard of Pacquiao-Rios.<\/span><\/div>\n

Bernie: Are the Chinese knowledgeable fans?<\/span><\/div>\n
Andy<\/span>: Yes, they welcomed me and knew who I was, the hold the biggest population in the world and they have alot of good atheletes and boxers. They know their stuff. My experiences in China were great ones..<\/span><\/div>\n

Bernie: Finally, you got your title shot against Joseph Parker, tell me about it.<\/span><\/div>\n
Andy<\/span>: Tyson Fury vacated the title due to his drug problems and inactivity. The WBO set up a title fight between the nuber 1 and 2 ranked contenders in the WBO division.The fight was to be in New Zealand and I only had 6 weeks to prepare. I think I did enough in that fight to win, but given the amount of time i had to prepare and having to adjust to a new environment which took more time, I felt that I didnt fight like I knew I could\u00a0 and i wanted to.He is a good inside fighter with a great jab, he is strong too. We’ve sparred together on previous occasions some years back. I dont have anything bad to say about him hes a real nice guy.<\/span><\/div>\n

Bernie: You will fight Kevin Johnson July 7th. He has a style that’s elisive, he gave both Vitali Klitschko and Kubrat Pulev fits. Have you studied his tapes?<\/span><\/div>\n
Andy: Yes, hes a great defensive fighter, we noticed that he drops his gloves at a certain point, we are gonna capitalize on that.<\/span><\/div>\n

Bernie: Do you have any hobbies?<\/span><\/div>\n
Andy<\/span>: I like baseball; I spend alot of time with my kids.<\/span><\/div>\n

T<\/span><\/strong>he second largest land-based country in Europe is the Ukraine. It is landscaped by great plains contrasted within shadow of the Carpathian Mountain Range. A population of 45 million people with 25% of its work force are employed in agriculture. Its main cities are Kiev (the capital), Yalta and Odessa. Since the Ukraine is a land richly filled with natural resources, it boasts a manufacturing industry of steel mills, oil wells, and mining. It also has been the jewel of Europe in terms of supplying the continent with farm products and raw materials.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Jaded by Russian rule and occupation for 300 hundred years, the inhabitants have endured great hardships and oppression that exist to the present day. In the past,\u00a0 there were horrors of intentional mass starvation due to a political conflict with Joseph Stalin (the Russian leader) in 1932, resulting in over 3.3 million deaths and atrocities that included the liquidation of 5.5 million citizens in death camps. If that was not dreadful enough, it was followed only a few years later\u00a0 by mass executions ordered by Adolph Hitler and the Nazi occupation in that country.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

As a consequence, the grandparents of the present day residents in that area were subjected to numerous years of suffering and persecution. Not surprisingly, the inhabitants of that land are a tough breed with weather marked by cool summers and harsh winters. The per capita income of the average Ukranian is $11,000 a year.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Sports are enjoyed in the Ukraine with soccer, volleyball and basketball as the favorites. But the primary sport that the country is noted for is boxing. With the dismantling of the Soviet Union and the Ukraine gaining its independence in 1991, it ushered in the opportunity for the sport of boxing to evolve and thrive, with the product being some of the best boxers in the world emerging from that province of the globe.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The present day government stimulates boxing programs throughout with subsidies and grants for amateur activity.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The advent of the Klitschko brothers reign as heavyweight champions for a full 16 years, which started with Wladimir’s Super Heavyweight Olympic Gold medal in 1996, opened the door for Eastern European dominance in amateur as well as the professional ranks.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Professional Pugilists such as Heavyweight contender Alexander Dimitrenko 40-3-1 (28) and WBA super lightweight champion and former Bronze Medal Olympian Andrey Kotelnik 32-4 (13) were also of Ukranian pedigree. Former Olympian and Heavyweight contender, Vycheslav Glazcov 21-1-1 (13) also recently fought for the WBA title in 2016.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

“The success of the Eastern European fighters is their willingness to fight for the shear enjoyment of it,” says trainer Andre Rozier. “They are not spoiled like their American counterparts, they are well disciplined in their habits and very grateful that they are compensated for what they do.” They certainly have a style of calmness in the ring dealing and executing with the element of pressure. Besides that, they often utilize a heavy jab and a long range lead hook. They also usually fight upright and are very technical with their footwork. Most fighters from that area are well established amateurs, and it is not unheard for them to have 300 or more fights. By the time they turn professional they are in their late twenties and are very well seasoned already.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The Ukrainian Olympic Boxing team of\u00a02012 boasted 2 gold medal winners, including the present\u00a0 pound-for-pound 130 pound professional champion, and two time gold medal winner, 29 year old Vasyl Lomachenko\u00a0 (10-1, 9 KO’s) along with cruiserweight phenom and current champion, Oleksander Usyk (13-0, 11 KO’s). In addition to the two gold medal winners, lightweight Denys Berinchyk (8-0, 5 KO’s) was a silver medalist, and two fighters won the bronze medal: welterweight Taras Shelestyuc (16-0, 1<\/span><\/strong><\/span>0 KO’s) and 30 year old Oleksander Gvoszdyk (14-0, 12 KO’s) who currently has his eye on an upcoming title shot as a light heavyweight.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The 2020 boxing team is also projected to dominate more than the 2012 team according to some experts. Othe<\/span><\/strong><\/span>r<\/span><\/strong><\/span> promising prospects include 29 year-old Lengen Kytrov 16-1-1 (13),\u00a0 32 year-old Sergey Deraynchenko 11-0 (9), 21 year-old Lyubomyr Pinchuk\u00a0 4-0 (3) and 23 Oleg Davhum 4-0 (2), the latter two both fighting out of Pittsburgh respectively.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The Crimean conflict in 2014 where Russia invaded the Eastern Province of the Ukraine followed a matchup in Moscow of Heavyweight titlist Wladimir Klitschko 64-5 (53) vs Russian Alexander Povetkin 33-1 (23) for the heavyweight titles. The fight was reminiscent in the same importance as the Joe Louis vs Max Schmeling fight in 1938, although no one knew of the importance of this matchup in the US. The result was a Klitschko’s unanimous decision win coupled with Povetkin hitting the canvas a few times.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Who is to say this fight may have eased international tensions and caused fewer casualties as a result of a peaceful annexation of Russia to this area. Although the sport of boxing in America is not what it was or should be, the the sport is obviously thriving in the Ukraine, Eastern Europe, Russia, the United Kingdom and Japan. As the\u00a0sport continues to gain extensive recognition throughout the globe, coupled with its achievements internationally, the sport will climb leaps and bounds above all its other sports competitors.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

If anyone has seen any of Artur Beterbiev’s fights, they can see he is a very special fighter. After obtaining The IBF Light Heavyweight Title and knocking out former German Olympian Enrico Koelling in the 12th round they can attest to it.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

His style is reminicent of a young Mike Tyson from twenty years ago in that he goes right for the jugular vein with tremendous punching\u00a0 power.\u00a0 The result of which is typically an early knockout, though this past fight was not indicative of that style. “Iron Mike comparisons to me is a flattering remark, however I consider myself an ordinary boxer to him who at twenty years old became the youngest boxer to become the Heavyweight Champion! We went over several strategies before the fight, I am very happy how it implemented for two reasons, one was the fight resulted in another KO and I reached the 12th round. What else can be better?” <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Koelling refused to engage for most of the fight. Instead,\u00a0 he backed up, held his hands high, and continually showed a great deal of respect for Beterbiev’s power. Compubox Stats had 322 landed Punches for Beterbiev out of 1111 thrown for (29%) as opposed to Koelling’s 64 connects on 252 attempts (25%). <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“There was too much at stake, I did not underestimate my opponent, I took the fight very seriously, moreover it was a title fight. There is an old Russian proverb that states, even a stick may shoot once a year.” Koelling was in survival mode for most of the fight while Artur kept firing with his formidable jab. Many of Koelling’s punches, especially his jab often missed. In the 11th round, Beterbiev rocked Koelling with a strong right hand, which had the challenger circling and backing up to avoid serious contact. <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In the 12th round Koelling took a knee after accumulating a barrage of punches. Finally referee Lou Moret called off the contest at 2:37 of the round after he was dropped a second time with a powerful right.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Born and raised in the city of Kharavurt, Republic of Dagestan, Russia, Beterbiev started out boxing at the age of 11. He was influenced by the success of his older brothers who also boxed. His Mother was a nurse and his father was a bus driver. Sadly, although his father died when he was still a young man in a car accident,\u00a0 when he was alive he was a big supporter to Artur and his boxing journey. <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n

Beterbiev, 32, presently resides in Quebec with his wife and four children. Having spent a good part of his career as an amatuer, he has been stalled in his craft with contractual defaults which promised him at least 4 fights a year and payments on time. The culprit has been GYM promotions, a subsidiary of Haymen Sports LLC. His contract is currently in litigation and it has caused him a great deal of anguish regarding how often he fights and how often he gets a payday. There was also a shoulder injury a few years back that stalled his progression also.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n

“The problem has been securing fights” Beterbiev said. “Boxers want huge compensation to fight me and that has limited my opportunities, so my progression has been slow throughout the ranks”\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n

As an amature he has had a decorated career with 200 bouts to his total, He had been an Olympic representative for the Russian team in 2008 and 2012. He has also faced and beaten former Professional Light Heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev in the 2007 Russian Amateur Championships in 2007. He lost to current Cruiserweight Champion Oleksander Usyk representing the Ukraine and he felt the scoring didn’t accurately reflect the fight after knocking Usyk down in the 2012 Olympics.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I invite coaches from the U.S. to my training camp and learn tricks necessary to win. I stick to a strict diet during training and not experiment with new foods. I eat strictly on time, consume all necessary food ingredients contained in meat and other products, and I avoid junk food.”<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n

On asking how he graded himself on the fight with Koelling? I would give myself a B-. however I wasn’t totally discouraged with my performance. There are many elements that may have affected the fight, I am sure my one year absence had an impact. It is possible that there was ring rust, but I did not have that feeling. I had three training camps in 2017, I was in good shape, I had plenty of sparring sessions. “<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n

The fighting parameters fight in range from 97 to 105 ponds. They are from countries whose home bases are located in Nicaragua, Mexico, China Thailand and Japan.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n

Such is the “unheralded” world of the Strawweights or the “Minimumweights” as they are also known; usually remote from the knowledge of the most die hard American Boxing fan. It is a special that was division formed in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City called the Light Flyweights (48 kg or 105.8lbs or below), not to be confused with the 105-108 pound counterparts in the professional ranks. The first Champion in the competition was Francisco Rodriguez from Venezuela and the last 2016 gold medal winner was Hasanboy Dusmatov from Uzbekistan. In the Olympic competition, American Nico Hernandez won a bronze medal that year also. One of the most famous Olympic competetors in the division has been Zou Shiming of China who gathered 2 Gold medals and a Bronze in three (3) respective years and who is a popular hero in his home country.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n

The professional division was formed in its inauguration in June of 1987 with IBF sanction when Kyung-Yun-Lee of South Korea knocked out Masohuru Karakami of Japan in June of 1987. The King of the Minimumweights was a fighter from Cuermanaco, Mexico named Ricardo Lopez Nava. (El finito) He held all four titles from the sanctioning bodies at one time or another from 1990-2001. He still holds the record for 21 straight title defenses with an outstanding 51-0-1 record eclipsing both Rocky Marciano and Floyd Mayweathers’ 49-0 ceremoniously. Lopez turned professional without ever losing an amateur bout. He is considered the greatest amateur boxer ever to step inside the ring. He was subsequently inducted into the International Boxing Hall of fame in 2007. He currently works as a boxing broadcaster for the Mexican Televisa Network. Other well known champions of the division were Anuch Photong which he was earlier mentioned 59-8-1 who held the IBF strap for most of the 1990s and Ivan Calderon Marrero, a southpaw from Guyambo, Puerto Rico who was a favorite fighter in New York and at Madison Square Garden. Another big strawweight champion was Roman Gonzales from Managua Nicaragua who held the WBA strap from 2008-2010. Gonzales or (Chocolatiato) who just fought in march against Thai boxer Wiscksil Wangek in Brooklyn’s Barcaly Center for the Super Flyweight title where he lost his first decision after 47 fights. With Jerry’s presence on the scene he gives you a blow-by-blow account of what went on inside and outside of the ring and he takes you to a place where you are\u00a0feeling the excitement and electricity from that historical period.<\/span><\/p>\n

He also reveals some tidbits of how Chuck Wepner had business cards with pictures of him knocking down Muhammad Ali in their match to help boost his liquor\u00a0sales as a distributor with his vendors after retirement. He also mentions about Larry Holmes getting treated with electric eels to help a damaged right arm injury before his title fight with Ken Norton.<\/span><\/p>\n

A chat with former WBA super welterweight champion Yuri Foreman<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Recently Yuri Foreman had one of his most poignant fights of his career when he was knocked out in the 4th round of his match with top ten P4P and current WBA and IBO 154-lb. champion Erslandy Lara. The fight took place at The Hialeah Park Racing and Casino on January 13th of this past year. To the most part of a Cuban-American partisan crowd, they witnessed a tactical first two rounds of the bout and then Lara opened up and took over.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Lara fired away with bombs in Round 3 and had Foreman on the canvas with a flash knockdown. This set the stage for the fourth-round knockout – a right uppercut at 1:47 of the session in which sent the ex- WBA \u00a0Super Welterweight king staggering, in which Foreman could not recover. <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m going to have to talk to my wife and handlers to see where we are going.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Yuri has a professional record of 34-3 (10 KO\u2019s). He is the former WBA and NABF Super Welterweight Champion. He had the first fight in Yankee Stadium in 34 years in a title defense against Miguel Cotto, and he is the first Orthodox Jew to hold a major title since Barney Ross. He also happens to be a Rabbi.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Born in Gomel, Belarus on August 5, 1980 in the former Soviet Union, Yuri Foreman (real name) came from a loving family. \u201cI was the only boy, so I was spoiled.” says the ex-champ. \u201cMy Father was a merchant, buying and selling items, he also worked in a factory.\u00a0 In a Communist environment, it was not as bad as people think – I had the best education, sports programs were encouraged and free, and I encountered little sense of anti-semitism.\u00a0 I would go out and play in the morning all day to play and my Mother wouldn\u2019t see me until dinner time because she knew I was safe.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Yuri started out swimming as a sport, but after being bullied in school, his parents encouraged him to go into boxing at age 7. When he was 9, the family moved to Israel, where he expounded on his boxing skills and won three amateur championships there.\u00a0 \u201cI used to watch Mike Tyson on Soviet State TV and I said to myself as a child that someday I would become a World Champion.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Yuri later in his teens realized that there was nowhere to go with his boxing in Israel, so he moved to the United States and settled in Brooklyn, New York in 1999. His first job was working in the Garment Industry in a clothing store in Manhattan making deliveries and sweeping floors. In addition to his job, he boxed and won the New York City Golden Gloves in his respective weight class in 2001. Foreman’s amateur career record was 85-5, which attracted the attention of promoter Bob Arum, where he signed a professional contract with Arum’s Top Rank, Inc.. \u00a0With his new promoter, Yuri had his first bout at the Pink central Hotel against Israel Felix, which resulted in a TKO for Yuri. During this time he met his wife, Hungarian Leyla Leidecker, who was also a boxer and a model.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Yuri rose up the ranks and took an undefeated record with wins over the likes of highly touted Saul Roman (W-10) and Andrey Tsurkan (W-10), whom he won the NABF Jr. Middleweight title from on a split decision.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Foreman at this time decided he wanted to explore his spirituality and Jewish roots so he decided to enter Rabbinical School. He entered Yeshiva at IYYUN in the town of Gowanus and it took him six years of study to become a Rabbi. \u201cI am not a pulpit Rabbi, I do not have a congregation, but I would like to use my training as a Boxer and Rabbi to unify people.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0During this time his wife converted to Judaism.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

After an undefeated record and a top-ten ranking, Foreman got a major title fight with then WBA Champion Daniel Santos in November of 2009.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Yuri’s dream came true with a unanimous 12-round decision over the tough Puerto Rican, in which he also got an 11th round knockdown. \u201cI can remember him coming in 20 pounds over from hydration at 175 lbs. to my 161. He hits hard.\u00a0 Santos has been the hardest puncher I have faced up to date.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

On Foreman’s title defense at Yankee Stadium on June 5, 2010, he fought a widely promoted and publicized affair with the tough Miguel Cotto. Cotto was coming off of a loss with Manny Pacquiao and wanted to regain a title real bad. The fight was a competitive one in which Yuri bested a couple of stanzas, but in the seventh round, Cotto landed some bombs. \u201cI felt my knee give way, I didn\u2019t feel much pain because of the adrenalin going through my body.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

In the middle of the seventh round Yuri’s knee gave out that he had braced. \u201cThe knee was weak from an injury that I incurred from when I was 15,\u201d explained Foreman. \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

During the fight he slipped several more times.\u00a0 Referee Arthur Mercante Jr. saw the danger of Foreman’s injury, but continued to encourage them to fight.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy wife was frantic, seeing that I may get severely hurt in the ring. When you fight Miguel Cotto, you must have two legs and two arms to defend.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

During the seventh round, after falling, Mercante told Yuri, \u201cSuck it up kid.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Yuri told The USA Boxing News<\/em>, \u201cI took exception to that, because I wasn’t a kid, I was a champion. I had fought international competition, so I thought he was out of line.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The eighth round saw Yuri a sitting duck for Cotto’s bombs and finally his trainer Joe Grier threw in the towel. \u201cA fighter no matter what shape he is\u00a0 in does not want to quit,\u201d remarked Foreman.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The round, however, continued after a two-minute wait and Mercante clearing the ring. It was a valiant piece of bravery in what Foreman displayed that night. He exchanged combinations with Cotto to finish the round on one leg. Mercante appeared to be too involved to put on a dramatic show at Foreman’s expense. The ninth round saw Foreman defending himself in almost a dangerous way.\u00a0 When Cotto hit him with a left hook to the body in the early seconds of the round, the fight was over.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was an amazing experience fighting in Yankee Stadium, the atmosphere was electrifying, all you could see were rows and rows of people cheering for both fighters, and no, I\u2019m not a baseball fan,\u201d said Yuri.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Yuri keeps his WBA and NABF belts on a shelf at home on a shelf.\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t try to make a shrine to put them in, they are what they are,\u201d he stated.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Before his recent loss to Erislandy Lara, Foreman was on a six-bout winning streak, beating Jason Davis (TKO-2), Lenwood Dozier (W-8), Jovany Javier Gomez (KO-1), Jamaal Davis (W-8), Gundrick King (W-6), and Brandon Baue (W-6).<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Foreman said, \u201cThe fans have been a big support to me, \u2018thank you\u2019 is not enough to say, I want the fans to know to accomplish anything in life you have to believe in yourself, challenge yourself and be better than the day before.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Whether it is a retirement or a ring comeback, Yuri Foreman has had an interesting career that he could be very proud of.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

A chat with welterweight contender Sadam Ali<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Across the Verrazano Bridge into Brooklyn we drove, myself and my friend Mike, who I met up with a couple of years ago, and happens to be the Uncle of former WBA\/INT welterweight Champion and Olympic representative Sadam \u201cWorld Kid\u201d Ali. Awhile ago he promised me this interview in Sadam’s gym in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I did not expect what I experienced next. After an hour’s drive in Christmas traffic on a cold Tuesday night, we found ourselves on a remote corner of Atlantic Avenue, where a Yemenese Deli stood. In the back of the Deli on the street we walked into a basement guarded by a heavy wooden door. The gym was a humble facility with a ring, treadmill, and sprinkled with numerous heavy bags.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In the ring WBA middleweight king Danny Jacobs was working on some maneuvers with a sparring partner. I was directed and introduced to Sadam Ali, who was digging hard into a heavy bag at the time. I could not help to admire his hand speed and power for such a moderately sized man. With a genuine smile he shook my hand and said he was happy to talk. During his workout he showed a powerful stride on his treadmill, I knew why he had such great footwork in the ring.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

After the workout he sat down with me and he said that he started out in karate at the age of 5. His father felt that that there were too many girls in the family that he played with and wanted to roughen him up! \u201cI loved the gym, I was 8 and I loved shadowboxing, my idol was Prince Naseem Hamad,\u201d said Sadam.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

After his first competition at the age of ten, he lost his debut, but despite that, an older man took him under his wing and nurtured the child’s love of boxing. \u201cI had two things in my youth – school and boxing,\u201d remarked Ali. Sadam had 255 amateur bouts, winning 235 and losing 20, leading him to the Olympic trials, one fight with a win over current WBO\/WBC super lightweight champion Terence Crawford. Some other opponents include Gary Russell Jr. and Rasheed Warren. In the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Ali lost to Romanian Georgeian Popescu in the first round of competition by a score of 20-5.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Sadam turned professional after the Olympics and stopped Ricky Thompson in the first round on January 17, 2009 at the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino in Biloxi, MS. Ali then defeated his next 17 opponents, scoring 10 knockouts before he signed to meet Michael Clark on April 19, 2014 at the DC Armory in Washington, DC for the interim WBO NABO welterweight title. Sadam bombed out Clark in the opening frame.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Ali’s next fight was for the vacant WBO Inter-Continental championship against the rough Jeremy Bryan at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY on August 9, 2014. Fighting before his hometown fans, the bout was a close nip and tuck affair. After ten rounds, Ali emerged the winner via a split-decision victory.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWorld Kid\u201d ended 2014 on a winning note by defending his WBO\/INT laurels by stopping Luis Carlos Abregu in nine rounds at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on November 8.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The coach of his pro career has been Andre Rozier which has led Sadam to a professional record of 23-1 (13 KO’s).<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Sadam considers his win over Abregu to be his greatest accomplishment in the ring to date.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

On April 25, 2015 at New York’s Madison Square Garden, Ali outpointed Francisco Santana over ten rounds to capture the WBA International welterweight title. For a fighter that kept pretty busy, he was out of the ring for 11 months before being matched with Jessie Vargas for the vacant WBO world welterweight championship on March 5, 2016 at the DC Armory. Although it was an exciting battle, Ali was TKO’d in 9 rounds.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

“My ankle gave way in the fight and when I went down it prevented me from getting up and fighting the rest of the way. I was ahead on the cards at the time I was knocked down twice in the eighth round and by the ninth round I had nothing left in my legs,\u201d explained Sadam. \u201cThere was a concern before the fight because I hurt my ankle in training. One of my ambitions is to avenge the loss with Jessie Vargas, any undefeated fighter in his right mind would want to avenge the loss from the only guy that beat me professionally!\u201d<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Ali said he would fight anyone in the talented pool in the welterweight division, it is up to his management. A good match-up in this writer’s opinion at this time would be former champion Devon Alexander. The future is still on for this talented 28 year-old.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI’d like to get another crack at the world title,\u201d said Ali.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Mike and I had a cup of coffee later on in Sadam’s father’s deli. I pondered and could not help how the neighborhood has changed.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Subsequently, after the Vargas fight, Sadam met Saul Corral at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX, on September 17, 2016 to dominate the fight with a 10-round unanimous decision and a 4<\/b><\/span>th<\/b><\/span><\/sup> round knockdown.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
